David Beckham, OBE was born on the 2nd May 1975 and is an English footballer. He has played for Manchester United, Preston North End, Real Madrid, Milan, and most recently Los Angeles Galaxy. He has also played for the England national team for which he holds the all-time appearance record for an outfield player.
David Beckham’s rise to prominence began when he attended one of Bobby Charlton’s soccer schools when he was just 14 years of age. Whilst at the soccer school he won a keepy-uppy contest and was later invited to Barcelona to attend a training session. Soon after his successful soccer schools appearance he signed schoolboy forms with Manchester United, and on 8 July 1991 signed a Y.T.S. contract with the club.
David Beckham played a huge part in Manchester United’s triumphant F.A. Youth Cup campaign of 1992 alongside other upcoming stars like Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Nick Butt, Keith Gillespie and Robbie Savage.
Daved Beckham’s professional career began in 1992 with Manchester United, making his first-team debut at aged 17. While with Manchester United, David Beckham won the Premier League title six times, the FA Cup twice, and the UEFA Champions League in 1999. He left Manchester United in July, 2003 to sign for Real Madrid, and won the La Liga Championship in 2007 which would prove to be his final season with the club.
In January, 2007, David Beckham left Real Madrid for the Major League Soccer club Los Angeles Galaxy, and he signed a five-year contract with his new club on 1 July, 2007. While still a Los Angeles Galaxy player, Beckham spent two loan spells in Italy with AC Milan in 2009 and 2010. On 20 November 2011, when Los Angeles won their third MLS Cup, Beckham joined an elite group of players who have won three league titles in three different countries.
David Beckham made his international debut for England on 1 September 1996, at aged 21. He became England captain from 15 November 2000 until the FIFA World Cup finals in 2006, during which he made 58 appearances for his country. Beckham earned his 100th cap against France on 26 March, 2008, and became the all-time record holder for appearances as an outfield player on 28 March, 2009, when he overtook Bobby Moore’s total of 108 caps. With 115 England international appearances to date, and having missed the 2010 World Cup through injury, Beckham has not played for England since 14 October 2009. He remains 10 caps short of goalkeeper Peter Shilton’s record 125 appearances for a player of any position.
David Beckham has twice been runner-up for FIFA World Player of the Year and in 2004 became the world’s highest-paid footballer (salary and advertising deals). Beckham was the first British footballer to play in 100 UEFA Champions League matches.
He is third in the Premier League’s all-time time assist provider chart, with 152 assists in 265 appearances. When he joined the MLS in 2007 Beckham was given the highest player salary in the history of the league, with his playing contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy worth US$6.5m per year over the next three years.
He is married to Victoria Beckham and they have four children – Brooklyn Joseph, Romeo James, Cruz David, and Harper Seven. In 2009, the couple’s joint wealth was estimated at £125 million.
