Jenson Button, MBE (Jenson Alexander Lyons Button) was born 19th January 1980, in Frome, Somerset, UK. is a British Formula One racing driver who has raced for Williams (2000), Benetton/Renault (2001-2002), BAR/Honda/Brawn GP (2003-2009), and McLaren (2010-Present). He was the 2009 Formula One World Champion, driving for Brawn GP.
Jenson Button began karting at the age of eight and in 1991 he won the British Cadet Kart Championship and six years later he won the European Super A Championship and the Ayrton Senna Memorial Cup. In 1998 at aged eighteen he won the British Formula Ford Championship and the Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch. In that same year he became the winner of McLaren Autosport BRDC Young Driver Award.
Next year he became a driver in the Formula Three and competed for Promatecme team. He did a good job there and became more popular. Jensen Button received £4m a year sponsorship from Marlboro in Formula 3 which was spent on PR to boost his image enabling him to enter F1 the following year, despite only finishing third in the F3 championship in 1999.
Jensen Button first drove in Formula One with the Williams F1 team for the 2000 season. However, the following year he moved to Benetton, which in 2002 became Renault, and then in the 2003 season he moved again, this time to BAR. They were renamed Honda for the 2006 season, during which Jenson Button won his first Grand Prix in Hungary, after 113 races.
Honda withdrew from the sport in December 2008, which left Button without a drive for the 2009 season. Ross Brawn subsequently led a management buyout of the team in February 2009, and Button fortuitously found himself in an extremely competitive, Mercedes-engined car. Button won a record-equaling six of the first seven races of the 2009 season, and secured the World Drivers’ Championship at the Brazilian Grand Prix, having been ahead on points all season.
His success also helped Brawn GP to win the World Constructors’ Championship. In 2010, Button moved to McLaren, partnering fellow British racing driver and former World Champion Lewis Hamilton. After finishing fifth in the Drivers’ Championship in 2010, Button finished the 2011 season as runner-up. To date Button has started 228 races and has won 15 with a total of 49 podium finishes. Button was named as one of the “Men of the Year” in both 2009 and 2011 by Top Gear Magazine.
When he was awarded the MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in 2010, Button said “The past 12 months have provided me with such an exhilarating journey. We literally started with nothing, but had the belief, determination, and passion to take on the world and succeed. Everybody at Brawn GP played their part and it was down to their expertise, dedication, and hard work that we were able to achieve so much.”
Like many Formula One drivers, Jensen Button resides in the principality of Monaco He lived in Guernsey for 18 months before returning to Monaco in 2012. Button also owns properties in the United Kingdom and Bahrain. His hobbies include mountain biking, competing in triathlons and body boarding. His car collection includes a Nissan GT-R, a 1956 VW Campervan, a Honda S600 and a Mercedes C63 AMG, numerous Ferraris, including an Enzo, and his championship winning Brawn BGP 001.
